Nicolas Cage may have purchased dinosaur bones IRL, but that doesn’t mean the actor will be going extinct anytime soon.
Cage stars in post-apocalyptic survival thriller “Arcadian” where he and his two sons Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins) and Joseph (Jaeden Martell) must fight back against mysterious creatures that prey on the dwindling human population. The world collapsed due to the climate crisis, and now, the monsters are sent to “cleanse the planet of the human race,” as Cage mutters in the trailer. Sadie Soverall also stars.
“Arcadian” is directed by Benjamin Brewer, with whom Cage previously collaborated with for “The Trust.” Mike Nilon penned the “Arcadian” script. Lead-actor Cage also produces the film along with David Wulf, Braxton Pope, Mike Nilon, Arianne Fraser, and Delphine Perrier.
“Arcadian” will have its world premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival.
“What drew me to the project was the brothers at the center of the story and their close bond,” Brewer said in a statement (via Entertainment Weekly). “That’s something I can relate to very deeply. I liked the idea that the coming-of-age story could be rendered in a sort of ‘Mad Max’ apocalypse world, giving these recognizable tropes of growing up a dark fairytale hue, and I was also excited to have an opportunity to work with Nicolas Cage again.”
Up next, Cage is set to appear in horror film “Longlegs” directed by Oz Perkins, son of legendary “Psycho” star Anthony Perkins. The Neon release co-stars “It Follows” breakout star Maika Monroe as a FBI agent assigned to a cold case that has sudden gotten a hot lead, with Cage perhaps playing the killer.
Cage previously teased his retirement plans, telling Uproxx that he is looking to exit film and instead pursue a career in the TV space. “I like staying fresh. I mean, I like to keep mixing it up. I want to do it all,” Cage said. “And I feel that I’ve, at this point – after 45 years of doing this; that in over 100 movies – I feel I’ve pretty much said what I’ve had to say with cinema. And I’d like to leave on a high note and say, ‘Adios.’”
Cage added, “I think I have to do maybe three or four more movies before I can get there, and then hopefully switch formats and go into some other way of expressing my acting. I would’ve liked to have left on a high note, like ‘Dream Scenario.’ But I have other contracts that I have to fulfill, so we’ll see what happens.”
“Arcadian” premieres April 12 in theaters. Check out the trailer below.
