Margot Robbie is looking to her next role: director.
The “Barbie” actress and LuckyChap producer told Variety that directing is a “dear ambition” of hers to add to her multi-hyphenate talents. Robbie founded LuckyChap, which produced “Barbie” and “Saltburn” in 2023, as well as past Oscar-winning film “I, Tonya.”
“The tricky thing is, as much as I say I’m strict about saying no as a producer, I also get so excited with all the things that I could produce that it ends up taking up all my time,” Robbie said. “And as an actor, I get to work with so many brilliant directors and watch them do it — it’s like having a front-row seat to the best master class in the world. So it’s really tempting to keep doing that. But directing is a dear ambition of mine.”
She added of LuckyChap’s slate, “We have a penchant for actress-turned-writer-directors, between Olivia [Wilde], Greta [Gerwig], Emerald [Fennell], and Megan [Park]. It’s our sweet spot. […] We have to be really clear about why we started the company and what our North Star is always going to be. Because any opportunity is exciting. We set out to break barriers with and for female talent, and if it isn’t a project that could potentially do that, then it’s not a project for us.”
Robbie is next confirmed to be reuniting with “Barbie” co-star Ryan Gosling for an “Ocean’s 11” prequel, and was formerly eyed to lead a “Pirates of the Caribbean” all-female spinoff film that has since been shelved. However, Robbie recently felt dispelled rumors of other potential projects she is not affiliated with.
“I also read so much stuff that’s not true. ‘Margot Robbie’s doing that!’ And I’m like, ‘I’m 100 percent not and I’ve never even heard that,’” Robbie said. “I know people do that just to whip up a buying frenzy. I mean, we should take it as a compliment.”
Robbie’s LuckyChap was inaccurately reported by Page Six in November 2023 to be interested in purchasing the rights to Britney Spears’ memoir “The Woman in Me.” Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Brad Pitt’s Plan B were also listed as possible production companies circling the memoir.
“It’s not true,” Robbie said at the 2023 Variety Power of Women Los Angeles event, adding when asked if she would ever consider playing Spears, “It’s not true, it’s not true.”
