The industry’s holiday break is over, and awards season trudges on in the new year. Beginning with a recap of the New York Film Critics Circle Awards in Manhattan on January 3 and ending with a preview of the Golden Globes set for this Sunday, January 7, “Screen Talk” co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio survey shifts in the awards season tectonics this month so far.

It’s a crowded one, with Oscars voting closing on January 16, nonstop guilds nominations, the AFI Awards gala (January 12), the Critics Choice Awards (January 14), BAFTA nominations (January 18), and the eventual Oscar nominations (January 23). Oh, and there’s the Sundance Film Festival, kicking off January 18. Oh, wait, there’s also the Primetime Emmy Awards, long since strike-delayed and finally airing on January 15. Yes, we’re still giving out awards to “The White Lotus” Season 2, which premiered in October 2022.

Another shake-up this week was the news that Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” would now vie for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars despite campaigning for original. The Academy’s executive writers committee made the call — with governor Eric Roth recusing himself from the conversation, as he himself is a contender for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The switch makes way for “The Holdovers,” written by David Hemingson, to take the lead in Best Original Screenplay.

Anne and Ryan also dish on what movies we’re most looking forward to in 2024, including a set of films directed by Luca Guadagnino.
