The Academy announced the short lists for ten categories this week, which reveal strength and weakness for contenders big and small. With the international members growing each year — the Academy confirms it is over 20 percent — expect films like Spain’s “Society of the Snow” and the U.K.’s German-language “The Zone of Interest” to show up in multiple categories, alongside big-budget movies like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”

Screen Talk co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio dig into the documentary and international categories to gauge where those races may be heading. Ryan explains what really happened at the Gothams when Robert De Niro accused Apple of censoring his political speech. They also discuss the fate of Jonathan Majors, who following his conviction on assault charges has been dumped by Marvel/Disney. He will no longer be playing Kang in the MCU. What will happen to Searchlight’s ballyhooed Sundance pick-up “Magazine Dreams”?

And as we head into the holidays, we select our favorite Christmas movies, old and new. Predictably, Anne favors more traditional fare, while Ryan has a predilection for Stanley Kubrick. Wait, did he make a Christmas movie?

Happy holidays everyone! We’ll be back in the new year.
