After following her Oscar-winning directorial debut “Promising Young Woman” with the star-studded comedy of manners “Saltburn,” it’s safe to say that Emerald Fennell‘s filmmaking career is off to a good start. And if the British hyphenate gets her way, her resume might soon include an entry in cinema’s most beloved prehistoric franchise.
In a new interview with Deadline, Fennell was asked about her dream projects as a filmmaker and actress. While she acknowledged that she has not suffered from a lack of creative freedom in her directing career, Fennell said that she dreams of putting her own subversive spin on a “Jurassic Park” movie.
“I honestly feel that I’ve been so lucky. I’ve been able to make my dream projects already,” Fennell said. “But my favorite film of all time is ‘Jurassic Park,’ so I would love to get in on the dinosaurs. Well, first and foremost, it’s very erotic. I think humans and dinosaurs have gotten to that stage in their time together where things are starting to get quite thrilling. So, there’s a marriage between a man and a velociraptor and it’s basically a domestic drama.”
Fennell also opened up about the types of acting roles that would interest her if she is somehow unable to garner Hollywood support for a human-on-dinosaur romance in the near future. She expressed a desire to play a Disney-style villain, and lamented that she missed her chance to play Ursula after Melissa McCarthy landed the role in Disney’s live action “The Little Mermaid.”
“I think it’s got to be a super villain, right?” Fennell said when asked about her dream role. “It’s sad they’ve just done ‘The Little Mermaid’ because Ursula the Sea Witch is my inspiration and my muse. I’ve always loved her. I’ve always felt she deserves her own prequel where she’s misunderstood. She’s just going to the clubs, in that iconic outfit, stuffing souls into little bottles and then harvesting them.”
