Eve Hewson is rocking out in rom-com “Flora and Son.” The actress leads writer-director John Carney‘s latest movie musical, as seen in the above exclusive clip ahead of the Apple TV+ film‘s debut on the platform. Hewson duets with her onscreen son, played by Orén Kinlan, who raps. “Flora and Son” premiered at Sundance and is next set to screen at TIFF.
Per the official synopsis, “Flora and Son” follows “single mom Flora (Hewson), who is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max (Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up L.A. musician, Jeff (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music.” Jack Reynor also stars.
Carney previously wrote and directed musical hits “Once” and “Sing Street,” and in IndieWire’s Sundance review of the film, Kate Erbland wrote that Carney was back in fine form with another “cozy Irish musical about the ways in which music can bond people together, the joy of creation, and the pleasure of someone unpacking their soul, all with that lovely Irish lilt.”
Actor Gordon-Levitt exclusively told IndieWire while at Sundance earlier this year that he promised Carney he would “practice every day” to convincingly portray a guitar teacher in the film. Gordon-Levitt also wrote a letter to Carney pitching himself for the role.
“John’s movies do this magic trick where he brings all the special fairy dust that a musical can bring, but he balances it with something that feels real and human and not ridiculous like some musicals can feel. I’ve always wanted to be in a musical but have never been,” Gordon-Levitt said. “When this script came along and it was John Carney. … I was like, please let me do this, this is so for me. You have to let me do it.”
“Flora and Son” premieres in select theaters September 22 and will be available to stream on Apple TV+ September 29. Check out the exclusive clip above.
