Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson are entering the Spider-Verse.
Johnson leads Sony-produced “Spider-Man” film “Madame Web,” playing the title character alongside Sweeney’s Julia Carpenter, the Marvel Comics character who becomes Spider-Woman. Emma Roberts, Adam Scott, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, and Zosia Mamet round out the cast.
“A week ago, I spent my life racing against time,” Johnson says in the trailer while working as a paramedic, “trying to save people who were running out of it. Until one moment changed everything.”
After a near-death experience, she can suddenly see the future, one that hinges on the protection of a trio of high schoolers, including Sweeney, who will become spider-centric heroes.
Per the official synopsis: “Meanwhile, in another universe… In a switch from the typical genre, ‘Madame Web’ tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.”
“Jessica Jones” helmer S. J. Clarkson directs the film. Clarkson previously directed for Marvel’s “Jessica Jones” and “The Defenders.” The cast also includes Tahar Rahim and Mike Epps. Up next for Sony and Marvel is the next “Venom” film, now set for November 8, 2024, and “Kraven the Hunter,” with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, slated for August 30, 2024.
The character Madame Web first appeared in “The Amazing Spider-Man” comics, with Web predicting the future of spider-centric superheroes. The film swapped release dates from October 6, 2023 to February 14, 2024.
