Adam Sandler might be forever known as the Sandman — but thanks to a new Netflix film, he’s also the “Spaceman.”
Sandler leads the upcoming feature from “Chernobyl” director Johan Renck and writer Colby Day adapted from the novel “Spaceman of Bohemia.” Channing Tatum and producing partner Reid Carolin are behind the upcoming feature, along with fellow producers Peter Kiernan, Michael Parets, Tim Headington, Lia Buman, and Max Silva. Director Renck, Ben Ormand, and Barry Bernardi executive produce.
“Spaceman” centers on astronaut Jakub (Sandler) who is desperate to woo back his wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan) after spending six months on a solitary research mission. However, Jakub requires some assistance in the romance department and is helped by a mysterious creature from the beginning of time, named Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano).
Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini also star in the film.
Mulligan recently appeared in Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” and is currently in the midst of an awards season campaign for the Netflix drama ode to late conductor Leonard Bernstein. Meanwhile, Sandler’s overall Happy Madison production deal with Netflix recently deepened with the animated feature “Leo.” Sandler is set to lead a yet-untitled upcoming sports memorabilia drama co-written by the Safdie Bros., with Josh Safdie solo directing. The “Uncut Gems” reunion, though, was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, with Sandler telling Collider that he is unsure when the film will go into production as it is dependent on Major League Baseball’s season.
“We’re not sure right now. We kind of missed the opportunity of baseball season because of the strike,” Sandler said, citing 118 days of picketing from the actors’ guild. “A lot of it was gonna be shot during live baseball. So it’s gonna take a minute. We’re figuring it all out right now. I’m not sure when it’s gonna happen.”
“Spaceman” premieres March 1 on Netflix. Check out the teaser and an additional first look photo below.
