Timothée Chalamet was poised to have another massive year in 2023. In addition to returning as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two,” he took on the iconic role of Willy Wonka in Paul King’s musical prequel “Wonka.” He also found time to collaborate with Martin Scorsese on a new Bleu de Chanel commercial and begin filming James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown.”
While the release of “Dune: Part Two” was ultimately pushed to 2024 amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, it’s still a very busy year for Chalamet. But that’s a good thing for the 27-year-old actor, who hates being idle. In a new cover story for GQ, Chalamet spoke about his love of being busy and reflected on how he struggled with cutting back his work schedule during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Chalamet explained that his small role in Adam McKay’s satirical comedy “Don’t Look Up” required him to spend more time quarantining than shooting. When he traveled to Boston for the film in 2020, COVID protocols required him to spend 14 days in quarantine. Once he was able to show up on set, he was quite eager to work and interact with other humans again. So much so that his enthusiasm was off-putting to some of his co-stars — including Jennifer Lawrence.
“By the time I got to set I was buzzing,” Chalamet said. “That was the day Jennifer said was the most annoying day of her life, working with me and Leo. I exploded out of my room.”
Lawrence’s annoyance may have been amplified by the fact that she consumed marijuana on set as a way of connecting with her stoner character. While promoting the film, she joked about being a constant target of pranks due to her intoxicated state.
“I was a real target,” Lawrence said. “Everyone was fucking with me. … I guess because I was high. Easy to fuck with.”
