Josh Holloway, Laz Alonso & Josh Peck Toplining Breakdancing Drama ‘Planet B-Boy’

Caity Lotz & Repulsive Woman-Beater Chris Brown Also In Cast, Film A Remake Of 2007 Documentary

Dance movies are big business these days, thanks to the success of the “Step Up” franchise. Cheap, generally star-free and with a steady audience, they are, if not quite a total home-run (as the Mary Elizabeth Winstead-fronted “Make It Happen” will attest), but a pretty good bet. Considering that, and the general fondness for 1980s nostalgia (hello “Footloose“), it’s surprising that we haven’t yet seen one that focuses entirely on the Ancient Greek art of breakdancing. That was the Ancient Greeks, right?

While we’re still keeping our fingers crossed for an eventual remake of “Breakin’,” it seems that a breakdance film is now on the way, as The Hollywood Reporter brings news that Screen Gems has begun production on “Planet B-Boy,” a remake of Benson Lee‘s acclaimed 2007 documentary, which examined how, while breakdancing might have peaked a few decades ago in the U.S, it remains a hotly contested sport in Japan, Russia, South Korea, France and Germany, among others.

Lee is again directing from a script by Brin Hill (upcoming Maggie Gyllenhaal/Viola Davis drama “Learning to Fly“) and Chris Parker (“A Vampire in Brooklyn“), and a synopsis, revealed by Screen Gems, reveals that the plot involves an American b-boy team and their coach who travel to the international championships in France to regain American pride in the sport. USA! USA!

The project has managed to attract a relatively promising, albeit firmly B-list cast, with Josh Holloway (“M“), Laz Alonso (“Avatar“), Josh Peck (“The Wackness“) and Caity Lotz (“Mad Men”) all on board. Also in the cast, unfortunately; domestically violent R’n’B star and all-around prick Chris Brown. How does that fucking guy still have a career of any kind? Shooting starts now, so we’d expect to be able to see Sawyer from “Lost” doing The Worm sometime next year.
