Kerry Washington Confirmed As Broomhilda In Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’

After a raft of casting that has seen pretty much every role big and small get filled, the one big question mark remaining for Quentin Tarantino‘s “Django Unchained” was who would take on the part of Broomhilda, the lead character’s slave wife who is sold off and raped, setting Django on his mission to find her. Well, it’s been cast and the name is one that has been kicking around for a while.

First linked as a candidate for the part this summer, Kerry Washington is now signed on for the role. At the time it was said the role required a fair amount of nudity making it a difficult one to cast, and while Tarantino was trying to land an unknown in the part, with Washington he has a solid actress for a character that was a bit thin at least in the version of the script we read. She’s essentially a damsel in distress…and that’s about it, but Washington — who you probably recognize from “Ray” or “The Last King Of Scotland” among many others featured turns — will undoubtedly bring some weight to the part.

This is likely the last major casting for the film, and as usual, Tarantino has brought together an interesting grab tag of talent. The credit block feature these names: Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, Dennis Christopher, Kurt Russell, Laura Cayouette, Don Johnson, M.C. Gainey, Tom Savini, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kerry Washington. The film will begin lensing early in 2012 for a Christmas Day release. [Deadline]
