It may have been more than forty years ago when Tammy Wynette first commanded that you “Stand By Your Man” but the words still ring true. Well, they do for Milla Jovovich at least.
The actress took to her Twitter account (via THR) today to lay a digital smackdown on Summit for apparently burying this weekend’s “The Three Musketeers” which just so happens to be directed by her husband Paul W. S. Anderson. “Are “summit” promoting it as a family adventure movie? Or are they resting on their laurels from “twilight” n making no effort? Let me know!” she told her loyal followers. And then she got her caps lock key involved adding, “I think ‘summit’ hve swept ‘3 Musketeers’, a grt family adventure film, under the rug in the US. Shame on them. SHAME ON YOU ‘SUMMIT.’” And actually, she does have a point here.
While overseas, the movie is doing the fancy pants red carpet thing opening up the Tokyo International Film Festival, back in the United States, the studio declined to show the movie to press. And while this is anecdotal, the push for the 3D blockbuster seems to have been somewhat muted in the past few weeks. However, in Summit’s defense: this movie is pretty terrible. As we noted in our review, the movie is a tedious slog that for all the hidden passages, cool toys, steampunk aspirations, plunging cleavage and swordplay is simply uninspired, which is not surprising given Anderson’s track record. Calling it a “grt family adventure film” is only accurate if you’re looking to punish your children (and yourself) by taking them. And while the ending is left wide, wide open for a sequel, the chances of that happening are zilch after it gets blown out of the water by “Paranormal Activity 3” this weekend.
But hey, if you want to see some bad wigs, banal dialogue and a simplistic plot explained away into incoherence, then “The Three Musketeers” is for you. It opens today, and if you’re got nothing better to do, you can check it out to see if Milla’s tweets are on point or if Summit is simply trying to save some coin on a lost cause.
