‘Pacific Rim’ Will Arrive Two Months Earlier On May 10, 2013; ‘Piranha 3DD’ Bumped To 2012

It seems no one wants to be a summer movie anymore, at least not in July 2013. Yesterday, “Thor 2” moved from its summer date to November 15, 2013 and now, another major movie is changing gears.

Warner Bros. has moved Guillermo Del Toro‘s “Pacific Rim” forward by two months, out of its previously dated July 12, 2013 release and will get it into multiplexes on May 10, 2013. The move is an interesting one because it arguably puts the film in path of more competition. Where in July it would just be squaring off against Tom Cruise‘s “Oblivion” and Steven Spielberg‘s “Robopocalypse,” in May it will now face “Iron Man 3” which opens a week before, “Fast Six” and “The Lone Ranger” that will arrive in the weeks following. We’re not quite sure of the logic here but perhaps WB are banking on the comic movie or the car flick to be moving out of the way. At any rate, the film should be an attractive spectacle for audiences, starring Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi, in the Travis Beacham-scripted tale set in 2025, which will see a human resistance form against a series of devastating monster attacks that threaten to destroy Earth.

For all you shlocky horror movie fans, a bit of bad news, however. It appears that “Piranha 3DD,” previously slated for a November 23rd release has been bumped to sometime in 2012. Given that we haven’t seen a poster or trailer yet it’s hardly shocking, and considering the logjam of movies arriving on Thanksgiving (“Hugo,” “Arthur Christmas,” “The Muppets,” “The Artist,” “My Week With Marilyn,” “A Dangerous Method“) it’s probably a good idea that it got out of the way. The film, a sequel to last year’s surprise hit “Piranha 3D” brought back a bunch of the cast members, even some who were dead, not that continuity matters much in a movie like this. So you’ll have to wait until next year to get your boobs-and-bait kicks. [Box Office Mojo/Shock Til You Drop]
