Shiloh Fernandez & Aldis Hodge Board Zal Batmanglij & Brit Marling’s Eco-Thriller ‘The East’

Park City has been the scene of plenty of break-out performances in recent years, but this year’s festival looks set to be known as the birth and unveiling of Brit Marling. The actress came to the festival with Mike Cahill‘s “Another Earth” and Zal Batmanglij‘s “Sound Of My Voice,” and walked away with her name on everyone’s lips — she’s since scored roles in “Arbitrage” opposite Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon as well as in Robert Redford‘s “The Company You Keep,” which boasts an all-star cast.

Lately, Marling has been plotting an eco-thriller reunion with helmer Batmanglij, and has already managed to build a strong cast around herself, including Alexander Skarsgard, Ellen Page, Toby Kebbell and Patricia Clarkson, with two more names now to be added to that list in “Red Riding Hood” star Shiloh Fernandez and Aldis Hodge of “Die Hard With A Vengeance” fame.

Fernandez will play a “free-spirited and sexually adventurous member of Skarsgard’s eco-terrorism group,” Hodge will take on the role of an “ex-military member of the townspeople who is affiliated with the group.” Page will play another group member, who is the former flame of Skarsgard’s and Kebbell’s characters. Kebbell’s role, strangely, is that of a doctor with Parkinson’s-like symptoms caused by a tainted drug. Marling, of course, stars as a female security agent who goes undercover in the anarchist terrorist society, but winds up falling for the leader (Skarsgard).

Shooting is set to begin any time soon with Marling and Batmanglij having co-scripted and Batmanglij going solo at the helm, as was the case with “Sound Of My Voice.” [Variety/THR]
