In this intriguing featurette, “The Boxtrolls” producer Travis Knight and director Anthony Stacchi explains the stop-motion process to Deadline Hollywood.
“It’s one of the first visual effects ever invented, it goes back over 100 years,” said Knight. “It’s something that’s akin to old school Hollywood magic. You don’t see that kind of thing typically in film anymore.”
“The Boxtrolls” is set in the Victorian town of Cheesebridge. An orphan named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright) and a group of quirky characters are at risk of being exterminated until Eggs and his friend Winnifred (Elle Fanning) conspire to save the community. On filming the animated feature, director Anthony Stacchi compared it to,”18 months of opening nights with no rehearsals.”
The talented voice cast also includes Ben Kingsley, Tracy Morgan, James Urbaniak, Toni Collette and Simon Pegg.
