Update: Variety reports that Aussie teen actor Callan McAuliffe has joined the film playing the younger version of DiCaprio’s Gatsby.
It seems that every model nowadays in addition to booking gigs on the runway, has an agent in Hollywood looking to break them onto the big screen. Brooklyn Decker, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Marissa Miller are just some of the recent names to line up Hollywood movies and now another one of their colleagues is set join their ranks.
Aussie model Gemma Ward — who has already had parts in “The Strangers” and this year’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is the latest name to board Baz Luhrmann‘s currently in-production “The Great Gatsby.” All the major parts are cast, so it remains to be seen what role Ward will take. We probably should mention that Ward officially “retired” from modeling when she turned 21 so this isn’t just any moonlight job for her — it’s gonna pay the bills.
We shouldn’t have to tell you this is based on the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, but let’s go through the stellar cast that has been lined up, shall we? Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the wealthy and mysterious Jay Gatsby; Carey Mulligan as Gatsby’s love, Daisy Buchanan; Isla Fisher as Myrtle, a married woman having an affair with Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton); Jason Clarke as George Wilson, Myrtle’s husband; with Tobey Maguire portraying protagonist Nick Carraway and Australian newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Carraway’s love interest, Jordan Baker. Aussie veteran actor Jack Thompson also joined the film last week but like Ward, there is no word yet on his role.
No release date has been set, but will ‘Gatsby’ make a play for an awards season 2012 release? You can probably get you Jazz Age records on it. [EW]
