After what looks like a long run of one film or television cameo after another, Josh Gad‘s celebrated run as the geeky missionary in Trey Parker and Matt Stone‘s hit religious-satire Broadway musical “Book Of Mormon” seems to have caught the eye of casting agents.
Gad has now been cast in “The Kids Are All Right” writer Stuart Blumberg‘s directorial debut, a dramedy starring Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins, Gwenyth Paltrow and Joely Richardson which follows three people who become unlikely friends while undergoing a 12-step treatment for sex addiction. While many may presume Gad’s role to be of a comedic nature, it sounds like anything but with the actor noted to play “Neil, an unrestrained sex addict with a strong appetite. He cheats his way through recovery programs until Ruffalo’s character becomes his sponsor and helps straighten him out.”
Having also been nominated for the Best Leading Actor in a Musical at this year’s Tony Awards, it’s a major gear change for Gad who will no doubt be hoping to translate his stage success on screen. This casting seems to be a major vote of confidence in his talent which will see the actor star opposite Ruffalo, who plays a protagonist that becomes romantically involved with Paltrow’s businessman while Robbins plays the other lead who is married to Richardson’s character.
Blumberg co-wrote the film with Matt Winston and shooting begins this month in New York City. [Variety]
