Crime Thriller ‘Cities Of Refuge’ Finds A Citizen In Charlize Theron

It looks like Charlize Theron is on the comeback trail. After a string of films that either underperformed or just weren’t worthy of her talents — “Battle In Seattle,” “In the Valley of Elah,” “The Burning Plain,” “Hancock,” “The Road” — the actress has lined up a formidable slate of projects. Next year she’ll be starring in two major tentpoles, Ridley Scott‘s “Prometheus” and “Snow White and the Huntsman,” and before the end of the year we may be hearing Oscar talk for her turn in Jason Reitman‘s “Young Adult.” So when we hear the words “crime thriller” associated with Theron, we can’t help but be a bit excited given the momentum she has right now.

Deadline reports that Theron is angling to produce and star in “Cities of Refuge.” Penned by Brandon Willer — a newcomer it seems given his lack of a presence on IMDb — the story follows “a female investigator (Theron) brought in to solve a brutal murder and kidnapping in which things aren’t what they seem.” Okay, wait a minute, there’s gotta be more to it than this right? Sounds like your standard procedural but there is likely more to this plot than meets the eye (at least we hope). But regardless, it looks like Theron wants to mix it up a bit after those two big mega movies which is always a good thing.

The actress hasn’t been seen on the big screen in quite some time now but she did just appear in the latest fancy pants Dior ad. Meanwhile, “Young Adult” hits on December 9th and has quietly started screening for critics so if anybody wants to throw us an invitation, that would be great.
