First Look Clip From Rodrigo Garcia & Glenn Close’s ‘Albert Nobbs’

After premiering to largely lukewarm reviews last weekend at the recent Telluride Film Festival, we now have our first look clip at Glenn Close in her titular, gender-bending role in Rodrigo Garcia‘s “Albert Nobbs.”

It’s a low-key scene with Close acting opposite an extra-grizzled Brendon Gleeson. The below-stairs drama has reportedly been developed by Close for nearly 15 years as she struggled to bring the stage production to the screen. The final project sees Close not only as the star, but co-writer (alongside John Banville) and producer in the film, which concerns a woman in 19th century Ireland who tries to pass for a man in order to make her living. Our own Telluride review was much more positive than most complimenting the film’s “uniformly excellent cinematography, costuming and set design” with “solid, sometimes brilliant supporting performances, an able script that cleverly avoids hackneyed plot turns and deft direction from Rodrigo García.” Which sounds pretty good.

No exact release date has been set though Liddell Entertainment and Roadside Attractions, who picked up the film, do reportedly have a fall release in mind. We’re guessing much of that schedule will be dictated by the reception the film draws throughout the rest of the festival season and whether the hype about Close’s performance gains any traction. The film will also play at the Toronto International Film Festival starting this week.
