M.C. Gainey To Play Big John Brittle In Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’

Christoph Waltz Is Injured During Pre-Production

As usual, the casting for Quentin Tarantino‘s next movie is a mix of big-name stars, respected character actors and random people we totally forgot about. And there is also a fourth category: “Hey, it’s that’s guy.” Which brings right to M.C. Gainey, whose familiar face Variety is reporting is in talks for “Django Unchained” in the role of Big John Brittle.

Believe us, even if you think you haven’t seen M.C. Gainey chances are that you have, his most notable turns of late have been as Bo Crowder on “Justified” and as the ironically named Tom Friendly on “Lost.” His part in “Django Unchained” (at least in the script we read) is relatively small. He’ll be one of three Brittle brothers, the outlaws who sold off Django and Broomhilda, who Schultz is tracking. Not a huge part but one that will play a crucial plot point as Big John rapes Broomhilda and brands Django with an “R” on his cheek for “runaway.” And certainly, Gainey brings the presence needed for the part.

There is still a handful of (smaller) roles to be cast, most notably that of Broomhilda. Pre-production is already underway, and so are the injuries, with Christoph Waltz dislocating his pelvic bone during training with a horse. Ouch. No word yet if this will delay production which is apparently set to begin in November, but we’ll soon find out.

Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio Christoph Waltz, Samuel L Jackson, Gerald McRaney, Dennis Christopher and the recently added Kurt Russell and Laura Cayouette round out the cast thus far. “Django Unchained” arrives on Christmas Day 2012.
