One of the biggest films of the year will also be on the darkest. David Fincher‘s Feel Bad Movie Of Christmas “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” will sap you of any Christmas cheer but dammit, we can’t wait for it anyway. Based on the massively popular best-selling book, and a potential franchise starter, the pitch black thriller will end the year with a bang. And while there is no full length trailer in sight just yet (we imagine it will arrive around the same time as “Moneyball” gets ready to hit theaters) these pics will have to do.
Following the first official movie still of Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander arriving last week, two more stills have been released giving us a taste of what’s to come, and they confirm the 2003 setting of the film. That’s right, this film takes place eight years ago. In a detail that’s been a bit overlooked thus far, back in December Fincher revealed that they were using the publishing date of Stieg Larsson‘s book as a guide for the setting.
“What year does it take place in? Well the books are delivered in 2004, so he’s probably thinking in terms of 2003, it’s not published until 2005, 2007 is the iPhone, so all those apps that would be available to the iPhone are probably something that Salander would have access to ‘cause she’s a bit of a Mac junkie,” he explained to Collider. “So you kind of go, ‘Well where do we draw the line?’ So we just said, look everything has to be pre-iPhone technology, because otherwise they would be sitting there going ‘Well we just go over here.’ They would have a compass; they would be able to tell what the weather was like. So there’s all that stuff, you just have to make a decision [that’s] fairly arbitrary, basically everything in the movie is pre-iPhone.”
So how do we know that temporal setting still stands? See that white plastic blob on the the coffee table in the pic below? That’s an old-school Apple AirPort base station that first arrived in January 2003. Yes, this writer is kind of a nerd. So yeah, there you go. No word yet on what other 2003-esque things will be touched upon, but maybe we’ll hear In-Grid‘s hit single “Tu Es Foutu“?
