“It’s pretty well done; I’m about 99% sure there won’t be any more. I’m very happy with the last Burmese episode, and another film might be misinterpreted as an unnecessary and mercenary gesture. I don’t want that to happen,” Sylvester Stallone told Empire last spring, but that was before the mega success of “The Expendables.” With that film proving there was an audience who wanted to see the 65 year old blow stuff up, it seems that Sly has changed his mind about playing John Rambo one more time.
“Conan the Barbarian” screenwriter Sean Hood recently spoke to FearNet and revealed a script is in the can for another adventure for John Rambo. “I recently finished a first draft of ‘Rambo: Last Stand‘ for Millennium Films, based on a story idea by Sylvester Stallone. Hopefully, Mr. Stallone will eventually have the time and the inclination to do another Rambo.”
With that nugget of news, Empire dug a bit more and caught up with Hood who confirmed that Sly was very much involved in getting this moving. “I met with Mr Stallone twice last year,” Hood said. “He gave me a book, an older screenplay, and about twenty pages he’d written himself to use as inspiration for the last chapter of the ‘Rambo’ saga.”
“Rambo V” rumors have been circulating for years with various storylines being mooted including one that would find Rambo back in the Pacific Northwest cleaning up a U.S. Military experiment on elite soldiers gone awry. While Hood wouldn’t reveal the book or screenplay he was given, he did say that it’s not a prequel nor is it the south-of-the-border story that has also been tossed around — this would be something brand new, more in the vein of “First Blood” but “with the tone of Clint Eastwood‘s ‘Unforgiven.’ “
Of course, if and when this happens remains to be seen. Stallone will be busy the rest of this year with “The Expendables 2” and he’s also shooting that Walter Hill thriller this summer. But after that? His schedule is open and Millennium makes films on the cheap, and it’s exactly the kind of no-brainer movie they would make. So we could see Sly packing his bags for Bulgaria or Louisiana (the studio’s two fave shooting locations) to gear up as John Rambo one last time. Whether or not we actually want him to is another matter.
