Spike Lee Says ‘Red Hook Summer’ Isn’t A Sequel To ‘Do The Right Thing’

Clarke Peters from ‘The Wire,’ Nate Parker And Other Cast Members Revealed

Director, writer, actor, producer and prolific Twitter presence Spike Lee isn’t shy about speaking his mind. But when it comes to his next effort, “Red Hook Summer,” he’s been playing it very coy. What we know thus far is the film finished shooting in August and will be “Burning Up Da Summer 2012!.” The story will center on an adult from Atlanta who spends a summer in the titular hood. And oh yeah, Lee will be reprising his character of Mookie from “Do The Right Thing.” However, don’t expect Radio Raheem to be making an appearance.

Shadow & Act noticed that Lee hit Twitter yesterday to clear up some rumors about the film, posting: ” ‘Red Hook Summer’ is not a Sequel to ‘Do The Right Thing’ and it has nothing to do with [his Fort Greene/Michael Jackson project] ‘Brooklyn Loves MJ.’ Subject Matter? New Spike Lee Joint YO.” So then, what is it, Spike? Our guess is that we have a new movie on our hands from the director (awesome) and that the much publicized appearance of Mookie may be nothing more than a cameo. At any rate, it doesn’t look like the familiar stable of actors Lee works with will be dropping by either (unless they’ve done it on the sly).

The folks over at Blackfilm have revealed that the cast features mostly unknowns with a couple of recognizable faces, including Clarke Peters (Lester Freamon from “The Wire“), Nate Parker (who will have a role in the upcoming “Red Tails“), Turron Kofi Alleyne, Samantha Ivers, Limary Agosto, Heather Simms and Kalon Jackson.

So more bits and pieces to put together, and Lee will keep teasing us until he’s good and ready to give us a look. But we’re glad he’s back and let’s hope that 2012’s is the “Red Hook Summer” we’ve been waiting for.
