Announced earlier this summer, and already rolling in front of cameras as any cursory visit to Spike Lee‘s Twitter feed will tell you, details have been absolutely under lock and key for “Red Hook Summer.” The only thing we do know is that the story will center on an adult from Atlanta who spends a summer in the titular hood, and the Lee will be reprising his role of Mookie from “Do The Right Thing.” But whether this is a sequel, spinoff or something else entirely remains to be seen.
While we’re no closer to learning who else stars in the picture, Spike Lee has once again hit Twitter, this time posting a photo of himself standing beside a painted garage door with a teaser poster of sorts for the film pronouncing it will be “Burning Up Da Summer 2012!” Of course, the question that needs to be asked is if Lee will hit Cannes next spring. He’s been a semi-regular at the festival, winning a youth award for “She’s Gotta Have It,” a jury prize for “Jungle Fever” and it’s also where he premiered his seminal “Do The Right Thing.” Certainly, he’d be a welcome presence back on the Croisette but we also have to ask, if Lee is already promising a summer 2012 release, is a distributor already lined up?
Anyway, we don’t mind the tease because it has been three long years since the director’s “Miracle At St. Anna,” an admittedly uneven picture, but for a filmmaking voice as distinct Lee’s, his absence has been felt. “Red Hook Summer” marks what is recently flurry of activity for the director who will start filming his “Oldboy” remake with Josh Brolin next year and also has his HBO series “Da Brick” with “Attack The Block” star John Boyega gearing up as well. Looks like Lee is coming back strong and we can hardly wait.
