Teaser Trailer For Rodrigo Cortes’ ‘Red Lights’ Features Robert De Niro Turning Around Slowly

While many of our writers didn’t exactly love Rodrigo Cortes’ “Hitchcock in a box” thriller “Buried,” it’s hard to deny that Cortes took some inventive turns with the film’s high concept premise. Next up for the director is “Red Lights,” which MTV has the trailer for, and it’s about as minimalist as you would imagine from a director who stuck one of Hollywood’s most rapidly rising stars (at the time) in a box for two hours.

Red Lights” stars a supposedly fraudulent psychologist (Robert De Niro), who’s being investigated by a fellow peer who also has a penchant for investigating the paranormal (Sigourney Weaver). Along with heavyweights like De Niro and Weaver, Cortes has also assembled a fine supporting cast consisting of Cillian Murphy and breakout “Martha Marcy May Marlene” star Elisabeth Olsen. So hopefully Cortes doesn’t just use this solid cast as voices over a cellphone a la “Buried.”

The trailer plays it slow and minimalist, with De Niro slowly turning around to see something that is never revealed to the audience. The text reads, “No matter what you think you know…no matter what you believe in…the truth is the most dangerous illusion of all.” So, apparently, the truth will haunt you.

Cortes is a talent to watch, and with this fine ensemble, “Red Lights” could be an above grade fright picture unlike any we’ve seen recently. Cortes also did writing duties on this script, which he didn’t do on the previous “Buried,” so it’ll be interesting to see how he fares as a screenwriter as well. We’re hoping it was a pretty solid script to attract such a talented group of individuals. The film was shot in Spain, as was “Buried,” and is looking for a 2012 release. We’d guess late September to early October to grab the horror fans looking for a solid Halloween fright.
