‘The Smurfs’ Saga Will Continue, Sequel Dated For August 2, 2013

Did you leave a screening of “The Smurfs” with a vacant hole in your soul, a yearning for where the next adventure for everyone’s favorite polygamist communists would take them? Well, your prayers and incense burning have paid off. Sony has dated the sequel for August 2, 2013.

While the film did good business at home — opening at number #2 and taking in $35 million — internationally, where those little blue creatures are far more popular, “The Smurfs” opened in first place in 23 territories over the weekend. Ka-ching. Overall, the movie has already hauled in over $130 million worldwide and once you add up all the additional toys and crap being sold in conjunction with the movie, that’s a mighty pile of Smurf.

We presume Neil Patrick Harris will reprise his thankless role with Hank Azaria returning as Gargamel in another terrible, celebrity stuffed effort of no redeeming value. But hey, parents need a break and if they can calm their screaming children for 90 minutes, even it means sitting through a cinematic lobotomy to do so, Mom and Dad will endure whatever it takes.
