You know, sometimes all it takes for a bunch of old white privileged people to learn how truly magical and delightful life can really be is a trip to a foreign country where those plucky locals may be living in poverty, but gosh darn it, they are just so happy. Isn’t that inspiring?
The first trailer for John Madden‘s “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” has arrived and if you’re already feeling a bit queasy, you might need to get a sick bag — and even if you’re not, you may want to to grab one just in case. Based on a British best-seller from “Tulip Fever” author and “Pride & Prejudice” screenwriter Deborah Moggach, the film boasts a lineup of veteran actors including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson and Dev Patel with a story centering around an entrepreneurial Indian executive who decides to start up a first-rate home for elderly British retirees. The gaggle of Olds include The Racist One, The Tolerant One, The Pampered One and The One Who Is Bill Nighy. Patel unfortunately is left to play an outrageous cartoon version of an actual Indian person in a trailer that is too dumb to be offensive. We just didn’t think they made these kind of movies anymore.
Anyway, if you want to take this treacly journey, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” is booked into theaters for March 9, 2012. Synopsis, poster and trailer below (or in HD at Apple).
THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL follows a group of British retirees who decide to “outsource” their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past.
