Even though Neill Blomkamp is filming his highly anticipated follow up to “District 9” in Vancouver as we speak, details on the project remain tightly wrapped with pretty much the only thing known about the story is the fact it’ll revolve around “aliens and humans doing battle on Earth” and will be set 100 years in the future.
Producer Simon Kinberg recently added to the mystery, cryptically noting that the project is “very different movie than anything you’ve ever seen before” and, more importantly, that “it’s not necessarily an alien movie” and that “visually, stylistically it’s actually very different than ‘District 9.’” Obviously, with Blomkamp and the political allusions in his feature debut, “Elysium” was never going to be straight up action movie so it should come as no surprise that a Vancouver paper now throws up that “word on the fan sites is that the movie is set in a near future fraught with Anglo-Hispanic racial tensions, and aliens are involved.”
It will remain to be seen if the claim has any substance or whether it’s simply a rumor reacting to the cast Blomkamp has set in place which sees the Hispanic trio of Alice Braga, Diego Luna and “Elite Squad” star Wagner Moura (who reportedly plays the villain “with a crazy sense of humor”) all starring alongside Matt Damon, Sharlton Copley, William Fitchner and Jodie Foster.
We have our doubts considering Luna is actually slated to play “the best friend of Damon’s character” — which, in the grand scheme of things, could probably mean anything — but the prominence of Hispanic actors surely reflects something in the script, right? IMDB also lists Hispanic star Talisa Soto (“Mortal Kombat“) and Adrian Holmes (“Red Riding Hood,” “The Cabin In The Woods“) as other possible cast members.
“Elysium” will finish lensing in Vancouver late September where the production will move to Mexico for additional photography before a presumably lengthy post-production in prep for its March 1st, 2013 release.
