Granted, this isn’t official and is a bit of connect-the-dots work, but we think it’s a fairly safe guess at this point. As “Men In Black 3” gets out of its long and arduous shoot and heads into the final lap to get ready to hit screens next summer, it appears one tradition of each of the previous films is going remain intact: Will Smith is going to rap. Again, this is not official but the pieces are pretty easily put together.
In an interview with XXL, hip hop producer La Mar “Mars” Edwards spilled about his many, many projects, “We’re working on Tip, we’re working on the ‘High School‘ movie with Snoop and Wiz Khalifa. We’re working on Will Smith, bringing him back. That’s actually him on the other line right now. Snoop’s daughter, we just put out her first single. We’re doing the whole album. Mario wants me to do a mixtape with him, we’re working on that. I’m working on Ashanti. We’re just working on as much as possible.” Will Smith? Comeback? Is it a coincidence that “Men In Black 3” is just nine months away?
Let’s take a trip down memory lane. Each of the previous installments saw Smith dropping new tracks for each movie: the first had catchy but throwaway track “Men In Black” and the second contained the rock/rap hybrid of sorts “Nod Ya Head (Black Suits Comin’).” What will he do this time around? Who knows, but hooking up Edwards to get him current on what’s going on in the world of hip hop and who might drop a guest verse or two isn’t a bad idea. Or at least get him solid beats to work with.
So yeah, don’t be surprised if 42 year-old Smith once again gets on the mic. Our advice? Get back with Jazzy Jeff or maybe get Tyler The Creator on a guest verse (yeah, we know, that will never happen — Smith only raps clean). “Men In Black 3” arrives on May 25, 2012.
