Zack Snyder Decides To Direct Afghan War Drama ‘The Last Photograph’ Himself

Afghan war? Drama? Zack Snyder? Admittedly, something in there doesn’t make sense but believe it or not, the man behind “300,” “Watchmen” and “Sucker Punch” came up with an idea for just such a movie and with his regular collaborator Kurt Johnstad penning the script, they’ve had it in development for a while. Sergey Bodrov (”Mongol”) was originally attached to direct back in March 2009, and earlier this spring Niels Arden Oplev (”The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”) had come on board but it looks like Snyder doesn’t want to part with his baby any more.

Twitch reports that Snyder is gonna direct the damn thing himself once he’s done with “Man Of Steel” and it will certainly be a big shift and change of pace for the speed ramping helmer. The story centers on a journalist and the sole witness and survivor of an attack on a group of Americans in Afghanistan, who teams with an ex-special ops dude to help find the people who kidnapped one of this family members in exchange for the story. Christian Bale and Sean Penn were among the early names mentioned for the roles of the journalist and special ops agent respectively, but with this film at least two years away before lensing, it’s not known if they’ll be sticking around.

As for Oplev it’s not known why he exited the project, but he recently signed on to direct “Game Theory” for Summit and that’s likely where he’s putting his energies right now.
