Earlier today, a new poster for Lars Von Trier‘s “Melancholia” hit the web and a new website for the film was launched at about the same time, but was down when we went to go check it out. Well, it’s back up and running and there are a plethora of new images to gaze at.
Where “Antichrist” was outwardly surreal (hello, talking foxes), Von Trier seems to be going inward this time around. These pics have an overall tone of something creepy and spooky — so is “Melancholia” the psychological counterpart to the director’s much more visceral film from last year? Guess we’ll have to wait and see, but at any rate it looks simply gorgeous, and we presume that’s thanks to the work of cinematographer Manuel Alberto Claro.
As you already know, the film stars Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård and Udo Kier. “Melancholia” will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month, hit U.K. cinemas on September 30th and land on U.S. screens on a date TBD by Magnet. An official synopsis and lots more images below.
Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and brother-in-law (Kiefer Sutherland). Meanwhile, the planet, Melancholia, is heading towards Earth… MELANCHOLIA is a psychological disaster movie from director Lars von Trier.
