Steven Spielberg gives himself options and as such, he’s attached himself to numerous projects over the years that for whatever reason, he doesn’t wind up directing. Either they fall off the map, go back into development or, as in this case, get picked up by Brett Ratner.
Deadline reports that Ratner has signed on to helm “The 39 Clues,” one of which we hope is a clue on how to direct a watchable movie. Back in 2008, it was reported that Jeff Nathanson (“Catch Me If You Can,” “The Terminal,” the “Rush Hour” sequels), was adapting the children’s book series “The 39 Clues,” as a potential project for the for director to helm. The project is based on the popular young adult book series that follows a group of adventurers searching for clues hidden throughout history that will show the source of the power of the Cahill family.
This one is pretty much a ready-made franchise with eleven books to date and pre-existing tie-ins to online and card games. It appears that Nathanson’s script will still be used (Ratner seems to like his work) but no word on when he’ll will get to it just yet. Ratner will be busy finishing up his upcoming ensemble comedy “Tower Heist” in time for its November 4th release.
