Martin Starr & Geoffrey Arend Co-Star

The only thing better than discovering that one of our favorite young comic actresses, from one of our favorite shows, has been cast in a new project, is discovering that two of them are teaming up. But that’s the happy news that Variety broke during the night: Alison Brie, star of “Community” and “Mad Men,” and Lizzy Caplan, best known for “Mean Girls,” “Party Down” and “Cloverfield,” will star in the independent romantic comedy “Save the Date.”
The pair will star alongside another “Party Down” vet Martin Starr and Geoffrey Arend — best known for “(500) Days Of Summer,” and for being Mr. Christina Hendricks, the lucky dog — in a film directed by Mike Mohan (the 2010 Sundance entry “One Too Many Mornings“), and written by Mohan, comic book writer Jeffrey Brown (“Clumsy“) and playwright Egan Reich.
Brie and Caplan will play two sisters, the former one settled with her life choices, the latter one more restless (it’s like a funny version of “Melancholia“!). Arend will play a love interest for Caplan’s character, and, while there’s no word on who Starr will play, the premise and title suggest he could be Brie’s husband/fiance. Jordan Horowitz, producer of “The Kids Are All Right,” is behind it, with shooting planned in L.A. for next month.
It’s early days, obviously, but this is certainly one we’re keeping an eye on: both Brie and Caplan are poised to be huge (the former is currently shooting the Apatow-com “Five-Year Engagement,” playing Emily Blunt‘s sister, the latter will also squeeze in the Will Ferrell-produced comedy “Bachelorette,” with Kirsten Dunst and Adam Scott, this summer), and we tend to like what we’ve seen of Starr and Arend in the past. Whether it turns out to be your standard Sundance-baiting indie or something a little more special is all up to director Moran now, and we’ll likely find out how it turns out when it hits the festival circuit in 2012.
