‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Makes Its Case For Movie Of The Summer With Ace New Trailer

So, “Super 8” was pretty good, huh? With a couple of exceptions among The Playlist team (including this one, who hasn’t seen it yet), it’s getting very positive reactions, and from the looks of it better-than-expected box office, it’s carrying over with general audiences as well, marking an almost unprecedented two blockbusters in a row that turned out to be decent. But is the competition going to sit back and let J.J. Abrams be feted as the king of the summer blockbuster season? Don’t count on it.

Things have been a little quiet on the “Cowboys & Aliens” front, although that’s not too surprising, with the film not hitting theaters until the very end of July. But when Jon Favreau‘s western/sci-fi hybrid, which has always been one of the more promising movies of the summer, comes back, it comes back hard: a new trailer debuted at the Guy’s Choice Awards on Friday, and it’s pretty badass.

It’s along much the same lines as previous clips, showing Daniel Craig‘s amnesiac stranger washing up in town, landing up in jail, and just as local badman Harrison Ford turns up to claim him, the town is attacked by extraterrestrial invaders. Despite the noisy rock vibe of the old trailer continuing in this new one, it’s better cut, and we get glimpses of all kinds of new goodies, from an alien hand to Paul Dano (playing Ford’s no-good son.) A good trailer doesn’t necessarily mean a good movie, by any means, but with an excellent cast also including Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach, Clancy Brown, Keith Carradine and Walton Goggins, a solid script, and the generally-reliable Favreau at the helm, keen to make amends for “Iron Man 2,” we’ve got good vibes for this one. We’ll find it if we’re right when it hits theaters on July 29th. [Movieline]
