So, just how happy is Legendary Pictures with writer David S. Goyer? The man has had a pen in all three of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman films and he’s putting his stamp on Zack Snyder‘s “Man of Steel.” In short, he’s been behind some of their most successful projects and is readying a couple of their most highly anticipated releases, and they hope he can weave more magic on another franchise — “Godzilla.”
As you might recall, last spring Legendary and Warner Bros. picked up the rights to the legendary screen monster from Japan’s Toho studios and it seems they have been busy in that time. David Callaham (“The Expendables,” “Doom“) penned a first draft but wisely (and thankfully) Goyer is going to give it a rewrite. Other than that, there is not much known about what direction the film or story will take but with Goyer taking a crack at it, undoubtedly it should be better than Roland Emmerich‘s 1998 embarrassment.
Last month, Gareth Edwards, the director behind efficient, low-budget and moody indie flick “Monsters” was hired to helm and he’s still on board. It definitely marks a major leap for Edwards into the big time and we’re eager to see how his unique and cost-friendly approach to effects will be utilized on the film. From a studio perspective, if they can get the ingredients right, the potential for this film to reinvigorate dormant video game, toy and other revenues is huge so it’s no surprise they are taking their time with this and as such, there is no word yet on when it roll.
