Elvis Costello Pens New Song “Sparkling Day” For Anne Hathaway Romance ‘One Day’

Entering on the fringes of punk and new wave scene, mining seemingly the entirety of pop history for his diverse array of work, and now settling into a late stage persona of a rocker that even your grandma could love, Elvis Costello has seemingly done it all. But the music legend continues to surprise and his latest move is one that we didn’t anticipate.

MusicWeek reveals that Costello has penned a brand new song, “Sparkling Day,” for the upcoming Lone Scherfig-directed romance “One Day” starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. “With Elvis Costello….he hadn’t read the book which the film is based on but we knew it would be a subject he would like and want to be part of. He then saw the film and understood precisely what we meant,” explaid UMPG senior creative services manager Becca Gatrell about Costello’s involvement.

Based on the best-seller by David Nicholls, the story follows a young man and woman on one day a year, for 20 years, after they share a one-night stand at university. While the trailer was a bit of a disappointment, we’re holding out hope that this will be a bit of a refreshment from the forthcoming onslaught on summer films. And with Costello arming up with a new song, we hope this points to a strong soundtrack for the film.

“One Day” opens on August 19th and Elvis Costello will be on tour throughout the summer.
