Update: A couple more scanned pics from /Film.
Just as we were starting to wonder what was going on with “Dredd,” a release date got locked down last week and now a few more images have surfaced from the reboot which judging by the first looks, is either going a delightfully grimy and grim take on the comic or something a bit more decidedly low rent.
Bleeding Cool has scanned the latest pics to appear in the print issue of Empire and while we get a few more shots of a helmeted Karl Urban, we finally get our first look at Olivia Thirlby in the film. The actress, a staple of indie fare like “Juno” and “The Wackness” seems to be making a conscious career turn with some grittier choices with this comic reboot now on her CV and the alien invasion flick “The Darkest Hour” hitting before the end of the year. The promise for this one is certainly there. Pete Travis is at the helm for the story that finds Dredd pairing up with a trainee judge with psychic powers (Thirlby) to take on Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), the matriarch of a drug gang that deals a reality-altering narcotic known as SLO-MO, and who presides despotically over an enormous apartment block called Peach Trees, in which most of the action is set.
The script has been greeted with some positive buzz with comparisons optimistically being made to “Die Hard” and “Blade Runner.” Producers are said to be going for a hard-R rating, and the 3D film is slated to hit on September 21, 2012. And is it just us or does Thirlby look weirdly like Mary Elizabeth Winstead in that pic?
