With Marvel officially confirming they won’t be attending the San Diego Comic-Con this year, much of the conversation around this year’s event — which will also see Disney and Warner Bros. skip out — is just how important placating the geeks is to a film‘s overall box office. There are arguments on both sides, and we’ll leave that for another day, but one thing is clear: if a studio believes they have a winner on their hands, they will court the Comic-Con crowd to help get the word out.
DreamWorks has announced that the forthcoming reboot/remake of “Fright Night” will have a major presence in San Diego next month. On Friday, July 22nd, the entire cast — Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Imogen Poots — the director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Marti Noxon will on be on hand for a panel presentation. Events will also include a fan appreciation party and most importantly, a screening of the movie four weeks before it’s scheduled to hit theaters. Not bad.
This is the second major film to be getting a splashy Comic-Con bow, with “Cowboys & Aliens” confirmed for a premiere screening last week. Still about a month to go before the geeks descend on California, and likely much more to be announced. “Fright Night” opens on August 19th.
