Joel Kinnaman Replaces Orlando Bloom In ‘Lola Verus’ With Greta Gerwig

Hamish Linklater Also Comes Aboard

Life is very, very good right now for Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman. The young thesp got his breakout role in “Snabba Cash,” which started earning buzz at the Berlin Film Festival last year and went on to get snatched up for a Hollywood remake and launched its director Daniel Espinosa onto studio hot lists, as he was tapped to direct “Safe House” with Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington. As for Kinnaman, he quietly has racked up roles in a number of forthcoming films including the alien invasion flick “The Darkest Hour,” David Fincher‘s “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and yes, in his buddy Espinosa’s “Safe House” as well. Currently, he’s earning raves for his turn on AMC‘s “The Killing” but it looks like he’s about to get his biggest role in Hollywood yet.

THR reports that Kinnaman is set to join the Fox Searchlight rom-com “Lola Versus.” The new film from Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones (“Breaking Upwards”) follows a woman (Greta Gerwig) dumped by her fiancé shortly before her wedding, who heads out on a “series of encounters to attempt to discover her place in the world as a single woman before she turns 30.” Variety previously reported that Orlando Bloom was in final negotiations for the male lead, but that has now gone Kinnaman’s way and he’ll play a tattooed artist who breaks Gerwig’s heart. Lister-Jones will play the best friend, while Hamish Linklater — who earned strong notices for his performance in Miranda July‘s forthcoming “The Future” — has also joined as a musician friend who has a crush on the lead character.

While we don’t know what happened to Bloom (maybe too much “fun” on the set of “Three Musketeers”?), we’re stoked to see Kinnaman get his first shot at leading an American film. Production gets underway this month in New York and we presume it’ll hit next year.
