While “Red Dawn” goes through some drastic changes to the point of who exactly the villains are in the film, another film stuck on the MGM bankruptcy shelf is “Cabin In The Woods,” the horror flick co-written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard — whose geek cred between them boasts “Lost,” “Alias,” “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “Cloverfield” — and directed by Goddard, is now being saved.
Lionsgate have swooped in and made a deal with MGM to distribute the film according to Deadline. And it’s pretty easy to see why ‘Cabin’ is now getting some attention. With Chris Hemsworth (who also features in the delayed “Red Dawn” ) getting some good reviews for his turn in “Thor” it’s no surprise another studio would be eager to piggyback off what is sure to be a very successful film and breakout role for the actor. No release date has been set, but somewhere around Halloween seems about right. The film was originally slated for a January 14, 2011 release date but MGM’s woes put the kibosh on those plans last summer.
Co-starring Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Jesse Williams and Kristen Connolly plot details are slim but it’s said to be a monster movie with a fresh take on the titular premise. At one point, there were rumors of a 3D conversion but no word if that actually happened, and if not, we presume that no one is going to spend any more money than they have to at this point. At any rate, we’re just glad it’s finally getting out there.
