If you don’t know the name Katie Aselton, don’t be too worried, but you’ll likely be hearing more of it very soon. The actress has knocked around the indie world notably in the films of her husband Mark Duplass, and she was also a regular on the series “The League.” But she took a big step with her directorial debut “The Freebie” last year, a comedy starring herself and Dax Shepherd that was not unlike this year’s “Hall Pass” — at least in its premise — focusing on a couple who give each other one night off from their relationship. However, for her next gig behind the camera, Aselton is switching up directions big time.
Variety reports that the actress and director has lined up Kate Bosworth and Lake Bell for the thriller “Black Rock.” Details are a bit slim right now, but the film will focus on three friends who go on a weekend getaway to an island only to discover they’re not alone. If it seems like some ambitious material for the up-and-comer, she’s well aware, and when we spoke with her earlier in the year, she was more than up for the challenge.
“It’s a thriller, something bloody and gory and beautiful,” Aselton told us about the movie. “I hope it’s within my wheelhouse but if feel that it’s beyond me then I’m probably going to call in back up… but it’s definitely going to happen, regardless.” Looks like backup wasn’t need.
Aselton got the story together and Mark Duplass wrote the screenplay, which will be far more structured than their previous collaborations. “Mark and I are batting the story back and forth right now. This one will be fully scripted because there’s a lot more action,” Aselton told us in January.
No word yet on when this will lens and it will likely be contingent on financing. The low budget feature is crowd-sourcing some of its finances with a Kickstarter campaign already up and running to help get it together.
