Lynne Ramsay’s ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’ Starring Tilda Swinton Will Hit Theaters December 2nd

So, hot on the heels of Lynne Ramsay‘s “We Need To Talk About Kevin” being announced in the first wave of TIFF films, Oscilloscope Laboratories has unsurprisingly dropped a fresh release date for the film, one that will allow it to build on its momentum from Cannes and what will surely be fresh buzz out of Toronto.

New York and Los Angeles arthouses will get beautifully depressed starting December 2nd. Why, exactly? An adaptation of Lionel Shriver‘s 2003 novel and starring Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller, the film tells the story of the mother (Swinton) of a teenage boy who went on a high-school killing spree as she tries to deal with her grief. The film hopscotches through time chronicling the relationship between mother and child both before and after the incident, and doesn’t give up any easy answers. Our man in Cannes, James Rocchi, called the film “fascinating, and chilling, and a welcome return for a director who shouldn’t have had to be away for as long as she was; Ramsay’s look at guilt, loss and shame is the kind of hard, unflinching stuff that gives off sparks of insight and truth each time it strikes hard at your brain and heart.”

With a minor score from Radiohead guitarist and composer Jonny Greenwood and boasting yet another command performance by Tilda Swinton, who many thought deserved the Best Actress award at Cannes, “We Need To Talk About Kevin” will be one of the big conversation pieces of the award season. Swinton is a huge candidate for a nomination but we’d love to see some steam build behind Ramsay as well. [IndieWire]
