Malin Akerman & Tom Cruise Will Get It On ’80s Style In ‘Rock Of Ages’

The last major piece of the casting puzzle of “Rock of Ages” seems to have been filled, and Adam Shankman has assembled a pretty motley bunch for his frizzy haired musical.

Deadline reports that Malin Akerman has joined the film in the role of a journalist doing a piece on Tom Cruise‘s character, Stacee Jaxx, and winds up sleeping with him and together they will sing Foreigner‘s “I Want To Know What Love Is.” Uhhh…..OK. Akerman joins an ensemble that includes Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta as the leads, Paul Giamatti as Jaxx’s manager, Mary J. Blige as Justice Charlier, the owner of a strip club, Russell Brand as Lonnie, the manager of rock club The Bourbon, Alec Baldwin as the owner of the same, Catherine Zeta-Jones as the villainess and Bryan Cranston as her husband and mayor of L.A. The musical will go in front of cameras this month with a release date of June 1, 2012 already set.

The role in the film is a small, but important one — offers had previously gone out to Amy Adams and Anne Hathaway — but it may still leave time for Akerman to possibly lens the Linda Lovelace biopic “Inferno” this summer. Director Matthew Wilder recently told 24 Frames that financing and casting should be closing soon with a start date hopefully happening within the next few months. But that guy tends to say a lot of stuff, so we’ll to see what happens.
