We know it’s pretty much the heart of the summer, but if you have plans to spend the last weekend of July doing anything other than sit in a movie theater, you might want to consider rearranging them. On one of the busiest release dates in recent memory, there seems to be something for everyone: blockbuster fans get “Cowboys & Aliens,” lovers of cult films get “Attack the Block,” those who like “Scarface“-esque dramas with breakout lead performances get Dominic Cooper in “The Devil’s Double,” indie types get Miranda July‘s “The Future” or Brendan Gleeson in sweary Irish action-comedy “The Guard,” subtitle-philes get French thriller “Point Blank,” documentary fans get “El Bulli” and “Life in a Day,” and people who hate their kids get “The Smurfs.”
And on top of all these, there’s “Crazy Stupid Love,” the much-touted romantic comedy from fast-rising writer Dan Fogelman, directed by “I Love You Philip Morris” duo Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. The picture, for which we really dug the script when we read it last year, stars beloved “The Office” star Steve Carell, in his first role since departing the show, as a mild-mannered family man forced to enter the dating world when his wife (Julianne Moore) leaves him for another man (Kevin Bacon). He enlists the help of a ladykiller (Ryan Gosling) to help him out, but his new friend is falling in love with someone (“Easy A” breakout Emma Stone) for the first time.
The buzz has been mounting around the film for a while now, thanks to good word from test screenings, and a solid trailer, but it seems to us that marketing has been a little quiet so far. That may be changing now, as Yahoo just debuted the final one-sheet for the film. It’s fairly uninspired, and could arguably be mistaken for a remake of “The Crying Game,” given Carell’s expression, but we’re not exactly expecting the world from a poster for a romantic comedy, so it hasn’t altered our optimism about the picture. We’ll see how it turns out when it opens on that busy, busy July 29th.
