Rob Marshall Makes It Official, Signs On To Direct ‘The Thin Man’ With Johnny Depp

Considering that these days Johnny Depp rarely strays too far from his comfort zone and seems content to keep working with the same folks over and over, this news is hardly that surprising.

However, official word has come down today that Rob Marshall has signed to direct the remake of “The Thin Man.” The film was first announced last fall with Depp aboard, and Marshall circling the director’s chair. Marshall just got off directing “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and it seems he and Depp have gotten along quite swimmingly.

The film will be based on the classic book by Dashiell Hammett that follows Nick Charles, who marries into money and “gives up a career as a hard-boiled gumshoe to become a semi-professional alcoholic and full-time trophy husband.” So, just transplant boozy Jack Sparrow for boozy upper crust dandy and you get the picture. Jerry Stahl (“Permanent Midnight“) is penning the screenplay.

No word yet on when this will go in front of cameras, but with Depp playing it cool on a ‘Pirates’ sequel and stealing away the latest director from that franchise, something tells us this will go first before Captain Jack Sparrow returns. Also, no word on how this affects “The Lone Ranger” which was potentially going to saddle up this fall, but we’re sure once Depp is done figuring out what island to buy next, some hard decisions will be made.
