Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Or perhaps, the mighty weren’t such hot shit to begin with. Craig Brewer inexplicably got Oscar love for the overrated “Hustle & Flow,” with a nomination going to Terrence Howard and a win for the wretched song “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” by Three Six Mafia. Anyway, Brewer followed that film up with the laughably terrible “Black Snake Moan” and is now reduced to directing the “Footloose” remake which comes out later this year. But he’s hoping a big new franchise project can get him back on his feet.
Deadline reports that Brewer has been tapped by Warner Bros. write their “Tarzan” franchise — yes, the F word is in full effect here — one of a slate of reboot/remakes there were announced earlier this year. Details are scarce, but Brewer has an idea for a story that will — god forbid — stretch over three films and he hopes he will get to direct the first one.
“Tarzan” has been knocking around a while now. Adam Cozad (the Jack Ryan reboot, “Archangel“) had a script at one point that didn’t get anywhere but WB is banking on Brewer having the magic key to unlock the uh, “potential” of a new version. Deadline say this is a “passion project” for Brewer, though by “passion” they probably mean “money.” Do audiences really want to see a guy commune with apes and swing through trees on a vine? Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
