One the one hand, director Joe Johnston is a wild card. While he’s celebrated for “The Rocketeer” he’s also been behind stuff like “Jumanji” and “The Wolfman” so you’re never quite sure who you’re gonna get. On the other hand, “Captain America: The First Avenger” has a great lead in Chris Evans, a pretty solid supporting cast, and thus far evinces the perfect tone of loyalty to the comic and character, with a good dose of goofy charm to show that it’s not taking itself too seriously. So you can see, we’re a bit conflicted about the forthcoming superhero flick, arriving on the heels of three comic movies that have been good (“X-Men: First Class“), middling (“Thor“) and bad (“Green Lantern“). However if the latest batch of clips from the film is anything to go by, we could be in for a treat.
ComingSoon has rounded up four peeks at the film that hit a number of different outlets yesterday and they are consistent across the board. Eager to keep some surprises in store for us when we get to the theater, only one clip shows Captain America in action (with the 3D being utilized for a few shots of his shield flying at your face) while the rest are dedicated to Steve Rogers’ transition from skinny kid to buff-bod stud. Like we said, there is a breezy vibe flowing throughout that make these clips easily engaging but if we had one minor quibble, its that the snatches of Alan Silvestri‘s flag waving score don’t leave us particularly enthused.
It’s only a week now before “Captain America: The First Avenger” will hit a theater near you. Check out what’s waiting for you by checking out the clips below.
