Watch: Kirsten Dunst Declares “The Earth Is Evil” In First Clip From Lars Von Trier’s ‘Melancholia’

Oh, Lars. Everyone’s favorite provocateur is back on the Croisette this year and he doesn’t show any signs of softening up. His latest, “Melancholia,” follows two sisters, Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg as they deal with the news that the end of the world is imminent and in the first clip to hit from the film, Dunst’s attitude is kind of, “Eh, fuck this place anyway.”

Declaring “The Earth is evil, we don’t need to grieve for it” the brief clip quickly lets us know where Dunst and Gainsbourg stand on this issue with the former pretty much deciding that this planet deserves what it gets. And knowing Lars Von Trier, there won’t be much of silver lining to that sentiment and we’re it’s just one statement of many that will poke and prod at audiences the way the director loves to.

Co-starring Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård and Udo Kier, “Melancholia” premieres next week. Check out the clip below along with what looks to be a (NSFW) TV spot which is essentially a much shorter version of the trailer and a VFX reel which offers up more glimpses from the film.
