Watch: Trailer For ‘The Future’ Won’t Change Your Opinion On Miranda July

Either you thought that “Me And You And Everyone You Know” was insufferably twee or it was the arrival of a new cinematic voice, but there seems to be very little in of a middle ground when it comes to Miranda July and the trailer for her latest effort will do little sway your opinion no matter which side of the fence you’re on.

The film, which our man at Sundance raved was “surreal, precious, devastating and brilliant,” focuses on an L.A. couple (July and Hamish Linklater) who are intent on adopting a cat they rescued but soon realize that when the cat is released from medical care in a month, their lives will change, be set, connected by responsibility and care to a future both unimaginable and wholly predictable. The twist? As the trailer reveals right from the start, the film is narrated by the cat named Paw Paw. This writer found the first half of the trailer to be somewhat cloying but was won over by the deeper dramatic notes of the second half. It looks like a very tricky balance of tones and we’re eager to see how it all plays out.

“The Future” opens on July 29th. Read the synopsis and check out the trailer below (or in HD at Apple).

THE FUTURE tells the story of a thirty-something couple who, on deciding to adopt a stray cat, change their perspective on life, literally altering the course of time and testing their faith in each other and themselves.
