Believe us, we’re rooting for director Tony Kaye if only because he’s had an uphill battle in Hollywood ever since “American History X.” With his last two efforts being either ignored (the powerful abortion documentary “Lake Of Fire“) or mired in film studio bankruptcy woes (the New Orleans thriller “Black Water Transit” starring Laurence Fishburne, Karl Urban and Brittany Snow) the guy could use a break. It’s just too bad that his latest, the star-studded “Detachment” doesn’t look like it will fit the bill.
THR has dropped a clip from the film it’s… odd, to say the least. Shot on obvious looking digital with someone going crazy in the editing suite, the minute long look has Adrien Brody giving an impassioned speech with sudden cuts to Tim Blake Nelson, Marcia Gay Harden, Christina Hedricks and uh, a sweaty forehead before closing. What was that? IndieWire’s Eric Kohn dropped one of the first reviews from the film and it’s not good. He’s calls it “a deeply awful production” that provides a “messy and incoherent” indictment of the American education system.
That’s a shame, but if you’re curious, the film is currently playing the Tribeca Film Festival. Watch the clip below.
